What's My Culy Hair Type?

Learn about the different curly hair types

World renown curly hair stylist to Oprah Winfrey, Andre Walker, developed a universal hair typing system.

This system has 12 hair types subdivided into 4 smaller categories.

I'm going to focus on types 2,3 and 4.

Wavy and curly hair comes in many different types, and understanding the nuances of each type can be crucial for properly caring for and styling your locks. Here's a breakdown of the various curly hair types and some tips for keeping your curls healthy, bouncy, and beautiful.

Type 2: Wavy Hair

Wavy hair is the mildest form of curly hair, and it's characterized by loose, flowing S-shaped waves that fall in gentle cascades. Type 2 hair is often relatively fine and doesn't have as much volume as other curly hair types. To keep wavy hair looking its best, use a lightweight, volumizing shampoo and conditioner that won't weigh it down. To style, try using a curl-defining cream or mousse to enhance your natural waves.

Type 3: Curly Hair

Type 3 curls are tighter and more defined than wavy hair, forming corkscrew-shaped spirals that range from loose ringlets to tight coils. Type 3 curls tend to be frizzy and prone to tangling, so it's important to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that will keep your hair hydrated and tangle-free. You may also want to use a leave-in conditioner or curl-enhancing gel to help define your curls and keep them in place throughout the day.

Type 4: Coily Hair

Type 4 hair is the tightest and most densely-packed of all the curly hair types, forming tight coils or zigzag patterns that can range from pencil-thin to springy and voluminous. Type 4 hair is often very delicate and prone to breakage, so it's important to use gentle, moisturizing products that won't dry out or damage your hair. Try using a deep conditioning treatment or hot oil treatment once a week to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.

Regardless of your hair type, there are a few key tips that can help you care for and style your curls:

  1. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair gently while it's wet. Avoid using a brush, which can cause breakage and frizz.
  2. Don't over-wash your hair. Curly hair tends to be drier than straight hair, so you don't need to wash it as often. Try shampooing every 2-3 days, and use a co-wash (conditioner-only wash) on the other days.
  3. Keep your hair hydrated. Curly hair needs moisture to stay healthy and bouncy, so use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help lock in moisture and prevent frizz.
  4. Don't towel-dry your hair. Rubbing your hair with a towel can cause frizz and breakage. Instead, gently blot your hair with a soft cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to remove excess water.
  5. Avoid using heat styling tools. Curly hair is more prone to damage from heat styling, so try to avoid using flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers whenever possible. If you do use heat, be sure to use a heat protectant spray and keep the temperature as low as possible.

By following these tips and understanding your curly hair type, you can keep your locks looking healthy, vibrant, and beautiful. Whether you have loose waves or tight coils, embrace your natural texture and show off your gorgeous curls with confidence!

Hope this helps, and have a great day on purpose!
